Skilled surgical and medical services and compassionate patient care for a wide range of diseases and conditions.General Surgery
General Surgery is one of the most rapidly-evolving fields in medicine today, with many exciting advances that have led to more successful outcomes, less invasive techniques and enhanced patient comfort.
NCH hospitals offer skilled surgical services to treat a wide range of diseases and conditions related to abdominal organs, including the stomach, esophagus, colon, liver, gallbladder, intestines and bile ducts. Surgical procedures include, but are not limited to:
- Breast surgery, including biopsies, lumpectomies and mastectomies
- Scopes to evaluate and treat conditions of the esophagus, stomach, colon and lung
- Colon cancer screenings
- Laparoscopic appendectomies
- Laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder
- Colonoscopies
- Hernia repairs
- Wound care
Whenever possible, surgeons use minimally invasive surgical techniques to reduce trauma and scarring, and help patients heal faster. Many of the procedures are done using advanced laparoscopic equipment. The surgeons operate through a small incision using slender instruments and a laparoscope that is connected to a tiny video camera, allowing them to perform the surgery with the use of a monitor. These procedures are much less invasive than traditional surgery, resulting in less pain and scaring, as well as a shorter stay in the hospital and speedier recovery.
Many of the procedures are performed in the Same Day Surgery Unit, with patients returning home on the day of their procedure.
